In a 12 step program, there are many ways to be of service to the group.
In the program, there is just one way to work with another alcoholic…the steps.
When the book says, “Practical experience shows that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics,” (p.89), I don’t believe the authors were referring to a coffee commitment…
While essential to the survival of the group, a service commitment (from my experience) is NOT the equivalent of working steps with a protégé.
I believe continous service AND “sponsorship” are BOTH required to build a solid foundation on which permanent sobriety can be established.
This fact is not necessarily true for a heavy drinker or a person with a drug problem…BUT if we are real alcoholics or true addicts (SEE STEP 1), then we should consider taking the steps and walking someone else through them, IF we want to stick around…and stay sober.
